How do Tesla promotions work, and what should I ask before I rely on one?

Tesla promotions come in a few types: trade-in bonuses, discounts for eligible groups, promotional financing or lease terms, trials on new cars and referral benefits. Each has its own conditions, and some depend on your order date, credit approval, verification or a completed trade-in. Offers change, so before you rely on one, read the official terms and ask Tesla to confirm how they apply to your order.

Who this guide is for

This guide is for the United States. It explains the types of Tesla promotion and what each depends on, using Tesla’s own support and offers pages, which we read on October 20, 2026. It shows no current prices. Offers appear only as a dated example from one market at one moment, because they change and vary by country and by order. Confirm with Tesla before you decide.

The kinds of Tesla promotions

Trade-in bonuses

Tesla can attach a bonus to a trade-in as part of a new purchase. Tesla’s Trade-Ins page says it accepts passenger cars, trucks, vans and SUVs toward a new or Certified Pre-Owned Tesla, and does not accept motorcycles, RVs or commercial vehicles.

Tesla says you can get an estimate before you order by submitting your VIN. The final offer is available after you place your order and is subject to a physical inspection. Reported damage, mechanical issues and modifications are not accounted for in the estimate, but they are accounted for in the final offer.

Our suggestion: ask whether the promotion applies to your vehicle, whether the trade-in must be completed to get it, and what happens if the final valuation changes. If you still owe money on the car, Tesla says to refrain from paying off your lease or loan in full before trading in, especially if the last payment is due near your delivery day, so ask how to handle it.

Discounts for eligible groups

Tesla can offer a discount to members of certain groups, and eligibility can require verification of status before you order.

Our suggestion: confirm that your group qualifies, complete any verification at the right stage, and ask whether the discount applies to the exact vehicle you plan to buy.

Promotional financing rates

A promotional rate is an annual percentage rate (APR) that applies to eligible purchases. Tesla says you can finance with a Tesla financier or a third-party financier, and that Tesla Financing is only available to qualifying customers.

Promotional rates can depend on the vehicle version, your credit, a minimum down payment, the financing term and the order date.

Our suggestion: ask for the APR, the term, the required down payment, the taxes and fees, and the credit requirements in writing, and confirm that the rate applies to your version and your order date.

Promotional lease terms

A promotional lease can state the length, the annual miles, the amount due up front, an acquisition fee and other conditions. Tesla’s leasing page says leasing is not available in all states, that additional taxes and fees may apply, and that estimated lease payments are not guaranteed and are subject to underwriting. Tesla’s financing page says leasing is only available to qualifying customers.

Our suggestion: ask about everything due at signing, the mileage allowance, the charge for extra miles and wear, and what the lease does not include. For the UK version of leasing, see Tesla Personal Contract Hire in the UK: what to check before you sign. For more on the trade-offs, see lease or buy a Tesla.

Trials on new cars

Tesla can include trials of software or connectivity with new cars, such as Full Self-Driving (Supervised) and Premium Connectivity, depending on the car and the offer terms. Tesla says subscription price and availability are subject to change.

Our suggestion: ask which trials come with your car, when they start and end, and what happens when they end.

Referral benefits

Tesla’s Refer and Earn program gives benefits tied to qualifying Tesla purchases. See the section on referrals below.

What is not a Tesla promotion

A government or utility incentive is different from a Tesla promotion.

Federal interest deduction. Tesla’s Incentives page, on October 20, 2026, described a federal deduction of up to $10,000 on loan interest for a new passenger vehicle under 14,000 pounds with final assembly in the U.S., purchased after December 31, 2024 and before January 1, 2029, for personal use. It says used vehicles and leases do not qualify, and that the Inflation Reduction Act ended as of September 30, 2025. Tesla says it does not guarantee vehicle or personal eligibility or program availability, and to consult a tax professional. Our suggestion: do not treat a possible deduction as a lower purchase price, and ask a tax professional how it applies to you.

State, local and utility incentives. Tesla says that depending on your location, state and local utility incentives may be available. It tells you to review the sponsoring entity’s website for details on eligibility and redemption, says these programs are outside Tesla’s control and can end at any time, and says it does not guarantee delivery by a specific date or incentive deadline. Our suggestion: check each program with its sponsor before counting on a benefit.

A dated example: Tesla’s Current Offers page on October 20, 2026

This is a snapshot of Tesla’s US Current Offers page on October 20, 2026. It is not a statement about what is available today. Tesla says on that page that all promotions are subject to change or end at any time.

On October 20, 2026, Tesla’s US page listed these examples:

Type What the page said on that date
Trade-in of a gas or hybrid car 2,000 free Supercharging miles with a completed trade-in
Group discount $500 off a Tesla vehicle for military, first responders, healthcare, teachers and students
Model 3 financing 1.99% APR for Performance and 2.49% APR for Premium Rear-Wheel Drive and Premium All-Wheel Drive, on terms up to 72 months, with conditions
Model 3 lease $3,000 down, 36 months, 10,000 miles a year and a $695 acquisition fee, with conditions
Full Self-Driving (Supervised) A 30-day trial upon delivery of a new vehicle
Premium Connectivity A 30-day trial for new Model 3 and Model Y, and a one-year trial for Cybertruck

The details behind them show why a headline is not enough:

  • Trade-in: the terms said the promotion required a completed trade-in of a gas or hybrid vehicle. Custom order and new inventory vehicles were eligible, and used vehicles and B2B sales were not. The miles expired two years after the delivery date and could not be postponed, assigned or redeemed for cash. Tesla said they may be revoked if the trade-in could not be completed for any reason.
  • Group discount: status had to be verified through ID.me before the order, and additional terms and conditions applied.
  • Financing: the Model 3 rates were for well-qualified buyers with excellent credit who ordered a new Model 3 on or after September 28, 2026, with a minimum down payment of 5% plus applicable taxes and fees. The Model Y rates had similar conditions and the same order date.
  • Lease: the Model 3 terms applied to applications submitted after August 24, 2026. Leasing was only available in select states and subject to credit approval. The terms listed a $0.25 per mile charge for extra miles, possible fees for late payments and excessive wear, and said the lease did not include maintenance or insurance.

Offers change, vary by country and must be confirmed with Tesla before you decide.

What to ask before you rely on an offer

This section is our suggestion, not Tesla’s.

  • Does it apply to my exact car? Ask Tesla to check the model, the version, and whether it is a custom order or an inventory car.
  • Which date counts? Ask whether eligibility depends on the date you order, apply for financing or a lease, or take delivery.
  • Is it in writing? Ask for the offer terms and for confirmation that your order qualifies.
  • What if my trade-in is not completed? Ask whether the benefit would be lost.
  • Can it be combined with other benefits? Ask about any limits on combining promotions, referrals or incentives.
  • What if my delivery date changes? Ask whether a delay affects eligibility or any deadline. If your date keeps moving, see why the Tesla delivery date keeps changing.
  • Is anything still required from me? Ask about verification, credit approval, payments or other steps.

Save a dated screenshot of the offer and its terms, and any confirmation from Tesla. A screenshot shows what was advertised, but it does not decide whether you qualify.

If the offer changed after you got your VIN, see my Tesla discount or incentive disappeared after the VIN.

How Tesla referrals work, and their limits

Tesla’s Refer and Earn terms, updated February 24, 2026, describe benefits for qualifying purchases made through a referral link.

  • Buyer benefits are only available when you purchase your first qualifying Tesla product.
  • Referral links cannot be applied after you place your order, cannot be credited after the order is placed, and cannot be used by the same Tesla Account more than once.
  • Certified Pre-Owned vehicles are not qualifying products. You must custom order or purchase a new inventory vehicle using a referral link.
  • Depending on the product, benefits are added as Tesla Credits, which expire 12 months after the Grant Date. Tesla says they can pay for Supercharging, a new vehicle purchase, Tesla Shop purchases, Tesla Insurance payments and upgrades, including subscriptions.
  • Tesla says paid advertising, selling or paying or offering incentives for use of referral links is not appropriate, and that it will not honor links tied to behavior that violates its terms.
  • Tesla says the program will not remain open indefinitely.

Our suggestion: before you order, check the official terms, confirm that your purchase qualifies, and make sure the referral link is part of the order.

Keep your own record

Whatever offer you rely on, the order paperwork and the car you receive are what count. TSL Check is the iPhone app we make for delivery day. Its checklist takes you around the car area by area, with a photo and a note on whatever you find, and a report you can keep with your order paperwork (how it works). It keeps your photos on your iPhone and has no connection to your order, offer or payments.

Frequently asked questions

Can I add a Tesla referral link after I order?

No. Tesla's Refer and Earn terms say referral links cannot be applied or credited after an order has been placed.

Does an advertised Tesla financing rate apply to everyone?

No. Tesla says Tesla Financing is only available to qualifying customers. On its Current Offers page on October 20, 2026, the promotional rates listed also had conditions on credit, vehicle, down payment, order date and term.

Can a Tesla trade-in bonus disappear if my trade-in falls through?

It can. In the terms on its Current Offers page on October 20, 2026, Tesla said promotional Supercharging miles may be revoked if the trade-in cannot be completed for any reason.

Are federal and state EV incentives the same as Tesla discounts?

No. Tesla's Incentives page lists federal tax provisions and state, local and utility incentives that are run by other bodies and are outside Tesla's control. Check eligibility with the tax authority or the sponsor of each program.

Can I rely on a Tesla offer staying available until delivery?

Not necessarily. Tesla's Current Offers page says all promotions are subject to change or end at any time, and Tesla's Incentives page says it does not guarantee delivery by a specific date or incentive deadline. Ask Tesla what applies to your order if the date moves.
