Insuring a Tesla in the UK before delivery: what to have ready
GOV.UK says you must have motor insurance to drive your vehicle on UK roads, with third party as the legal minimum. Tesla UK's delivery page lists final payment, driver's licence and trade-in documents, and does not list insurance, so do not wait for Tesla to ask. Work out with your insurer when cover should start, and keep the confirmation. This is not insurance advice.
Who this guide is for
This guide is for England, Scotland and Wales. GOV.UK says there are different rules for vehicle insurance in Northern Ireland, and we do not cover them. It explains what the official pages say and lists questions to ask. It is not insurance advice, we recommend no insurer, and we quote no prices or premiums, because they depend on you, the car and the insurer. Where we did not read something, we say so.
What the law says, from GOV.UK
We read three GOV.UK pages on October 28, 2026. They say:
- You must have motor insurance to drive your vehicle on UK roads. Third party insurance is the legal minimum: it covers you if you have an accident causing damage or injury to any other person, vehicle, animal or property, and it does not cover repair to your own vehicle.
- It is illegal to drive a vehicle on a road or in a public place without at least third party insurance. Even if the vehicle itself is insured, if you are not correctly insured to drive it you could be penalised.
- Registered keepers of an uninsured vehicle that has not been declared off the road (SORN) can be penalised. You do not need to insure a vehicle that is kept off the road and declared SORN. GOV.UK calls this rule continuous insurance enforcement.
- You can check whether a vehicle is insured on askMID.
GOV.UK lists the penalties on its pages, and we do not repeat them here: read them there for your case.
What Tesla UK’s pages say, and do not say
Tesla UK’s delivery page says the documents required at your delivery appointment may include final payment, your driver’s licence(s) and trade-in ownership documents. It does not list insurance. It also says final payment requirements vary by location and purchase method, that credit cards are not accepted for final payment and that, for deliveries to home addresses, delivery happens on your scheduled date between 08:00 and 20:00, with an approximate time sent on the day. Tesla UK’s ordering page does not mention insurance either.
We do not read this as meaning insurance does not matter. GOV.UK’s rule is about driving, and the delivery page is about what Tesla asks for. So the practical point is a gap: nothing on Tesla UK’s pages tells you to arrange cover, so do not wait to be told. Whether an advisor will ask to see it is something to ask them.
Questions to ask your insurer
These come from questions real buyers asked in owner groups. We give no answers, because they depend on the insurer and your situation. They are things to ask, not advice.
- Can I give you the VIN before I know the delivery date, and when must cover start?
- How does the start date work if the car arrives earlier or later than planned?
- Do you list this exact model and model year, and what if you have not listed it yet?
- Which drivers will be named, and what must I tell you about each, such as past licence suspensions or convictions?
- What do you need from me on the day, and how do I get the confirmation of cover?
- What changes if I add accessories or modifications after delivery?
Questions to ask Tesla
- Do you need to see proof of insurance, and when?
- If my date moves, what happens to the appointment and the cover I have arranged?
- Who do I contact on the day if the paperwork and the car do not match?
Before delivery: 7 checks
- Insurance in place for the day you take the car, with written confirmation.
- The exact version and VIN on the policy match your order.
- Named drivers are the ones who will drive.
- The date in writing, and what happens to cover if it moves. See why the Tesla delivery date keeps changing.
- Driver’s licence and the other documents Tesla lists.
- A way to show the policy on your phone at the appointment.
- Screenshots of Tesla’s page and your order, today. Pages change.
On delivery day: 7 checks
TSL Check is the iPhone app we make for Tesla deliveries. It walks you around the car area by area, with a photo and a note for each point. The seven that matter most:
- Walk around in daylight: panel gaps, paint, glass.
- Check the wheels and tyres against your order.
- Check the seats, the roof and both boots.
- Check the charge port and the cable you ordered.
- Check the screen, cameras and the driver-assistance features on the order.
- Check the keys and the app pairing.
- Ask the advisor to record anything wrong before you sign. See what to expect at a Tesla delivery center.
For the United States, where Tesla’s delivery page does ask about insurance, see insuring a Tesla before delivery.
Why you can trust this guide
We make TSL Check, BD Check and RVN Check. We sell no cars, we sell no insurance and nothing here depends on your choice. We quote no prices; everything cited comes from the pages named above, dated October 28, 2026. This is not insurance advice. For your own case, ask your insurer to explain each term, and consider an insurance broker if you want help, as GOV.UK notes.

Whatever you find at delivery, ask the advisor to record it before you sign, and keep a copy.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need insurance to drive my new Tesla away?
GOV.UK says you must have motor insurance to drive your vehicle on UK roads, and that it is illegal to drive on a road or in a public place without at least third party insurance. It also says that being insured on the vehicle is not enough if you are not correctly insured to drive it.
Does Tesla UK ask for proof of insurance at delivery?
We do not know. Tesla UK's delivery page, which we read on October 28, 2026, lists final payment, driver's licence(s) and trade-in ownership documents, and it does not mention insurance. Ask your advisor what, if anything, they need from you, and do not treat the silence as a sign that you can skip it.
What is the minimum cover?
GOV.UK says third party insurance is the legal minimum, meaning you are covered if you have an accident causing damage or injury to any other person, vehicle, animal or property. It does not cover costs like repair to your own vehicle. Which cover to choose is for you and your insurer.
Can I check whether a vehicle is insured?
GOV.UK says you can check if your vehicle is insured on askMID. It also says there are different rules for vehicle insurance in Northern Ireland.
My delivery date keeps moving. When should cover start?
We cannot tell you. It depends on the policy and the insurer. A fair question to ask is how a start date works if the car arrives later or earlier than planned, and what happens to the cover in that case. Ask in writing.
Do I need to insure the car if I do not drive it?
GOV.UK says you do not need to insure a vehicle that is kept off the road and declared as off the road (SORN), and that registered keepers of an uninsured vehicle that has not been declared off the road can be penalised. The rules are on the GOV.UK page, so read them for your case.
