Tesla Mobile Connector: what does it add, and does it work with any outlet?

Updated · Applies to: United States

Not any outlet: only those with a matching adapter. Tesla's US page says a standard household outlet gives up to 3 miles of range per hour and a 240 V outlet up to 30 miles per hour, depending on the model. The bundle includes a NEMA 5-15 and a NEMA 14-50 adapter; other outlets need other adapters. Tesla recommends a Wall Connector at home.

The short answer

Not any outlet. The Mobile Connector is Tesla’s portable charger, and its US page says you can charge “from different outlets at low to medium speeds”, and each outlet type needs a matching adapter. On a standard household outlet, the page says up to 3 miles of range per hour; on a 240 V outlet, up to 30 miles per hour “depending on vehicle model”.

We read Tesla’s US pages on October 30, 2026. Prices are not given here, because they change. Speeds are in miles of range per hour of charge, as Tesla writes them for the US; pages for other countries use kilometers per hour.

What it adds, outlet by outlet

Tesla’s table lists miles of range per hour of charge by model. Our summary for the Model 3 and Model Y, as Tesla writes it:

Outlet and adapter Maximum output Model 3 Model Y
NEMA 5-15, 120 V / 15 A (included) Common household outlet 6 5
NEMA 14-50, 240 V / 50 A (included) 32 A 30 27
NEMA 6-50, 240 V / 50 A (optional) 32 A 30 27
NEMA 14-30 or 10-30, 240 V / 30 A (optional) 24 A 22 21
NEMA 6-20, 240 V / 20 A (optional) 16 A 15 14
NEMA 6-15, 240 V / 15 A (optional) 12 A 11 10
NEMA 5-20, 120 V / 20 A (optional) 16 A 7 7

The numbers on the first row do not match the rest of Tesla’s pages: the introduction says “up to 3 miles” and the home charging page says “2-3 mph”. We do not know why, so for a standard outlet use the lower figures and ask Tesla.

What “works with any outlet” leaves out

The current US bundle includes the Mobile Connector (20 feet), an adapter for a standard 120 V outlet (NEMA 5-15), an adapter for a 240 V / 50 A outlet (NEMA 14-50) and a cable organizing bag. Anything else needs an adapter bought separately. Two more limits from Tesla’s home charging page:

  • For a 240 V outlet you already have, “your installer approves” it for charging use. A dryer-type outlet can give up to 30 miles per hour with the matching adapter.
  • With a Mobile Connector, you use the vehicle touchscreen and the Tesla app to manage and control charging. Tesla says the Wall Connector offers extras the Mobile Connector does not, such as scheduling and charging statistics, and calls it the recommended home solution.

Mobile Connector or Wall Connector

Tesla’s pages say the Mobile Connector is useful away from home and on extended trips, and recommend a Wall Connector at home and Superchargers or destination charging while traveling. For the Model 3 and Model Y Rear-Wheel Drive, Tesla lists the same maximum for both: 32 A, up to 30 miles per hour. That is a maximum, so it depends on the outlet, the breaker and the installation. See our guide on charging a Tesla from a normal outlet.

Is it included with the car?

Tesla’s US home charging page speaks of the warranty for a Mobile Connector “included with purchase of the vehicle”. The Tesla pages we read for Germany, Spain, France and Turkey say the opposite: it is not included with new vehicle orders but can be bought in the Tesla Shop. Read your own order, and for the full list see what comes with a new Tesla.

Before delivery

Our suggestions, not Tesla’s:

  • Find out which outlet you will use and what type it is before you order adapters.
  • Ask a qualified electrician about any 240 V outlet; do not use an outlet you have not had checked for charging.
  • Take a dated screenshot of the page and your order, in case the bundle changes.

What we did not confirm

We did not find on Tesla’s support pages the exact sentence “Mobile Connector adds up to 30 mi of range/hr. Works with any outlet.” We read it as marketing wording, and the support pages above show the conditions behind it. We did not confirm real-world charging times.

For delivery day, TSL Check is the iPhone app we make: its checklist covers the charging accessories and a test charge, with a photo and a note for whatever you find (how it works).

Frequently asked questions

How much range does the Mobile Connector add per hour?

Tesla's US pages give two figures for a standard household outlet: up to 3 miles of range per hour on the Mobile Connector page, and 2-3 miles per hour on the home charging page. With a 240 V outlet and the NEMA 14-50 adapter, the table lists 30 miles per hour for the Model 3 and 27 for the Model Y.

Does the Mobile Connector work with any outlet?

No. Tesla says you can charge from different outlets at low to medium speeds, but each outlet type needs its own adapter. The current US bundle includes adapters for NEMA 5-15 and NEMA 14-50 outlets; Tesla sells others separately.

Why do the Tesla pages show different numbers for a standard outlet?

The Mobile Connector page's introduction says up to 3 miles per hour, the home charging page says 2-3, and the adapter table lists 6 miles per hour for the Model 3 on a NEMA 5-15 outlet. Tesla does not explain the difference on the pages we read, so plan for the lower figures.

Can the Mobile Connector replace a Wall Connector at home?

Tesla recommends the Wall Connector for home, saying it offers the fastest charging speed and features the Mobile Connector lacks, such as scheduling and charging statistics. For the Model 3 and Model Y Rear-Wheel Drive, both list the same 32 A maximum, up to 30 miles per hour.

Do I need an electrician for a 240 V outlet?

Tesla says a 240 V outlet you already have must be approved by your installer for charging use. If you have none, a new one has to be installed. Ask a qualified electrician, since we give no installation advice.

Is the Mobile Connector included with a new Tesla?

It depends on the country and the date. Tesla's US home charging page mentions a warranty period for a Mobile Connector included with a vehicle purchase, while the German, Spanish, French and Turkish pages say it is not included with new vehicle orders. Check your order.
