Tesla panel gaps at delivery: what to check, what Tesla says and what to put in writing

Updated · Applies to: United States

We found no Tesla page that gives a tolerance for panel gaps or defines what is normal, so we give no millimeter figures. What you can do is look in daylight, photograph every panel line, ask the advisor to write what you found on the delivery paperwork before you sign, and keep it with your order. Tesla asks for written notice of defects within a reasonable time under the warranty.

Who this guide is for

This guide is for the United States and uses Tesla’s own support pages, which we read on October 29, 2026. It is about one thing buyers search for: panel gaps on a new Tesla, meaning the lines between doors, hood, trunk, fenders and bumpers. Tesla’s pages, it turns out, do not say much about them. We say what they do say, what they do not, and what a careful buyer can do on the day. We quote no prices, and we are not lawyers.

What Tesla’s pages say

On delivery day. Tesla’s Delivery Day page lists what you do before and at the appointment: the Tesla app for delivery details, the documents (final payment, driver’s license, auto insurance and trade-in ownership documents) and a vehicle introduction that covers features such as Full Self-Driving and software updates. It does not describe an inspection of paint, panels or gaps.

After delivery. Tesla’s After Taking Delivery page says new vehicles are protected by a New Vehicle Limited Warranty and Certified Pre-Owned vehicles by a Pre-Owned Vehicle Limited Warranty. It also says you receive the Monroney label when you take a new car.

The warranty. Tesla’s Vehicle Warranty page lists a Basic Vehicle Limited Warranty of 4 years or 50,000 miles, whichever comes first, and a Body Rust Limited Warranty for rust perforation resulting from a defect in material or workmanship. It says the page is for general knowledge and that the warranty provided with your vehicle is the authoritative document. It says you can view your warranty coverage in the Tesla app under Specs & Warranty. It also says that, to receive warranty service, you take the vehicle to a Tesla Service Center, and that before pursuing any remedy under applicable law Tesla asks that you give it written notification of any defects within a reasonable time during the warranty period and an opportunity to make needed repairs.

What Tesla’s pages do not say

We found no Tesla page that gives a gap tolerance, defines what is a normal panel gap or says whether a particular gap counts as a defect. We searched for one and found forums and third-party guides, which give figures that differ and cite no Tesla document, and a Tesla service bulletin about door panel brackets that is about something else. For that reason we give no millimeter figures. A number from a forum is not Tesla’s position.

How to look at the gaps

Our suggestions, not Tesla’s:

  1. Look at the car in daylight, not under the lights of a delivery bay.
  2. Compare each line with its mirror image on the other side of the car: the left and right door lines, both fenders, both sides of the hood.
  3. Check the lines you can see when closed: hood to fenders, door to door, door to rear quarter, trunk lid to body, bumpers to fenders.
  4. Open and close each door, the hood and the trunk, and listen for rubbing or a different sound from one side to the other.
  5. Run a finger along a line, if the advisor is fine with it, and note whether one side is higher than the other.
  6. Look at the paint along each line for chips and at the glass seals for gaps.

How to photograph them

  • Photograph every panel line you are unsure about, from straight on and from a slight angle, in the same light.
  • Take a photo of the matching panel on the other side from the same position.
  • Put a card or a ruler in the frame when you can, so the photo shows scale. Do not draw a conclusion about what the number means: only record it.
  • Keep the photos with their date.

What to put in writing

Before you sign, ask the advisor to write what you found on the delivery paperwork or in an email to you, with the date, naming the panel and the side. A sentence like “Left rear door to quarter panel gap noted at delivery by customer, photos attached” is enough. Ask what Tesla will do about it, and when, in writing. Do not rely on a verbal promise.

If you are unsure whether to take the car, read what to do when something looks off with a new Tesla. What you can do next depends on your contract and local law.

After you take the car

Tesla says warranty details are in the Tesla app and that service is booked there. Tesla also asks for written notice of defects within a reasonable time. So report what you noted in writing soon after delivery, attach your photos and quote your order number. According to Tesla’s warranty page, repairs expected to be covered by warranty show on the estimate in the app with no charge, and some repairs need an in-person inspection before coverage can be confirmed.

Questions to ask the advisor

  • Do you have Tesla’s written position on panel gaps for this model?
  • Will you note my observation on the paperwork before I sign?
  • If I accept the car with this noted, what will Tesla do about it and by when?
  • Who do I contact if the gap changes or the repair is not done?

On delivery day: 7 checks

TSL Check is the iPhone app we make for Tesla deliveries. Its checklist walks you around the car area by area, with a photo and a note for each point and a severity for what you find (how it works). The seven that matter most for this topic:

  1. Walk around in daylight and compare each panel line with its mirror image.
  2. Photograph every line you are unsure about, with a scale in the frame.
  3. Open and close every door, the hood and the trunk.
  4. Check paint and glass seals along each line.
  5. Add a note for each point to the checklist, with the date.
  6. Ask the advisor to write your observations on the paperwork before you sign.
  7. Keep the photos, the notes and your order summary together. See what to expect at a Tesla delivery center.

If your date keeps moving, read why the Tesla delivery date keeps changing.

Why you can trust this guide

We make TSL Check. We sell no cars and nothing here depends on your choice. We quote no prices and no tolerances; everything cited comes from the Tesla support pages named above, dated October 29, 2026.

Frequently asked questions

What is a normal panel gap on a new Tesla?

We do not know. We read Tesla's delivery, after-delivery and warranty pages on October 29, 2026 and none gives a tolerance or defines a normal gap. Figures in forums and third-party guides differ and are not Tesla's, so we do not repeat them. Ask the advisor what Tesla's position is, in writing.

Does Tesla's warranty cover a panel that does not line up?

Tesla's warranty page lists a Basic Vehicle Limited Warranty of 4 years or 50,000 miles and says the page is for general knowledge, with the warranty provided with your vehicle being the authoritative document. It does not mention panel gaps. Read your own warranty and ask Tesla whether your case is covered.

What should I do at delivery if a gap looks wrong?

Look at it in daylight, photograph it from the same angle as the matching panel on the other side, and ask the advisor to note it on the paperwork before you sign. Keep the photos and your order summary together.

How do I report it after I take the car?

Tesla's warranty page says you can see warranty details in the Tesla app under Specs & Warranty, and that service is booked in the app. It also asks that you give written notification of any defects within a reasonable time and allow Tesla to make needed repairs. Do it early and in writing.

Does Tesla say anything about inspecting the car at delivery?

On October 29, 2026, Tesla's delivery-day page listed documents, payment and a vehicle introduction of features. It did not list a body or paint inspection. That is why a written note on your paperwork matters.

Is a gap a reason to refuse the car?

We cannot say. It depends on your contract and local law, and we are not lawyers. What helps in any case is a dated record: photos and a written note from the advisor.
