Model Y vs Rivian R2: which one should you buy?

Updated · Applies to: United States · Model Y

Pick the Rivian R2 if you want a taller, more off-road-minded SUV: Rivian lists 9.6 inches of ground clearance, 90.1 cubic feet of total storage and up to 4,400 pounds of towing on the Premium and Performance. Pick the Model Y if you want the longest listed range (355 miles on the Premium Rear-Wheel Drive against the R2's 330), the widest choice of versions and a car you can order today.

The short answer

Pick the Rivian R2 if you want a taller SUV with more clearance and more storage on paper. Rivian lists 9.6 inches of ground clearance (Tesla lists 6.4 for the Model Y Rear-Wheel Drive), 90.1 cubic feet of total storage including the frunk, a 40/20/40 folding rear seat, a NACS port and, on the Premium and Performance, towing of 4,400 pounds.

Pick the Model Y if you want the most range on paper (355 miles on the Premium Rear-Wheel Drive against 330 for the R2 Premium and Performance), the widest choice of versions and a car with an order date today. Rivian labeled the R2 Performance “available now”, the Premium “late 2026” and the Standard “2027” on October 25, 2026.

The figures below come from the makers’ own US pages, which we read that day. Neither maker’s warranty is compared: we did not read Rivian’s.

What actually changes in daily life

Ride height and terrain. Rivian lists 9.6 inches of ground clearance for the R2; Tesla lists 6.4 inches for the Model Y Rear-Wheel Drive. If you drive on gravel, snow or trails, that is the row that matters.

Space. Rivian’s page splits storage into total storage (90.1 cubic feet, including the frunk), a rear area (28.7) and a rear area with the seats folded (79.4). Tesla lists 74 cubic feet for the Model Y on its model page, 76 in its compare view. The pages do not say these measure the same thing, so do not subtract one from another. Bring what you carry.

Size. By Rivian’s and Tesla’s figures, the R2 is 185.9 inches long and 66.9 high; the Model Y Rear-Wheel Drive is 188.7 long and 63.8 high. The R2 is 2.8 inches shorter and 3.1 taller (our arithmetic).

Towing. Tesla lists 3,500 pounds for the Model Y. Rivian lists 3,500 for the R2 Standard and 4,400 for the Premium and Performance; its page lists a Tow Package as optional, so ask whether the figure assumes it.

Range and speed. Model Y: 321 miles and 6.8 seconds to 60 mph (Rear-Wheel Drive), 294 and 4.6 (All-Wheel Drive), 355 and 5.4 (Premium Rear-Wheel Drive). R2: 275 miles and 5.9 seconds (Standard, 350 hp), 330 and 4.6 (Premium, 450 hp), 330 and 3.6 (Performance, 656 hp).

Charging. Tesla lists a 225 kW maximum and up to 160 miles added by a 15-minute charge for the Model Y Rear-Wheel Drive. Rivian says an R2 can add 150 miles in a 15-minute charge and go from 10 to 80 percent in less than 30 minutes on a DC fast charger, and that every R2 has a NACS port. The two measure differently, so use them as a guide.

Driver assistance. Tesla offers Full Self-Driving (Supervised) with a trial; Rivian lists an optional Autonomy+ with a 60-day trial at delivery. We did not compare them: both need an attentive driver.

Before you order: 7 checks

  1. The date. Ask each maker for a delivery date in writing, and what happens if it moves.
  2. Which version. Compare the same drive type and a similar power level.
  3. Cargo in person. Load what you carry.
  4. Towing. Ask whether the number assumes the Tow Package.
  5. Charging. Check what each network provides on your routes, and the terms.
  6. Warranty. Ask for the document for the exact version.
  7. Screenshots. Save both pages and your order today. Makers change versions and equipment.

On delivery day: 7 checks

TSL Check is our iPhone app for Tesla deliveries, and RVN Check is its companion for Rivian. Both walk you around the car area by area, with a photo and a note for each point. The seven that matter most:

  1. Walk around in daylight: panel gaps, paint, glass.
  2. Check the wheels and tires against your order.
  3. Open the frunk and every hatch; make sure they latch.
  4. Fold the rear seats and check the cargo area.
  5. Check the charge port and any cable or adapter you ordered.
  6. Check the screen, cameras and driver-assistance features you paid for.
  7. Ask the advisor to record anything wrong before you sign. See what to expect at a Tesla delivery center for what to bring.

Still choosing between Model Y versions?

If the R2’s size and clearance appeal but you want to stay with Tesla, the closest answer is the six-seat Model Y L: see Model Y L vs Model Y. For the standard versions, Model Y Standard vs Premium and Model 3 vs Model Y cover the rest.

Why you can trust this comparison

We make TSL Check and RVN Check, and we also make BD Check for BYD. We sell no cars and nothing here depends on your choice. We quote no prices, because they move; every number comes from the makers’ own pages, dated above, and the arithmetic we did is marked as ours.

Frequently asked questions

Is the R2 a better family car than the Model Y?

It depends on what your family carries. Rivian lists a 40/20/40 folding rear seat, 40.4 inches of rear legroom, 40.9 inches of headroom and 90.1 cubic feet of total storage including the frunk. Tesla lists five seats and 74 cubic feet for the Model Y. The two measure cargo differently, so load your own gear in both before you decide. The R2 page we read does not state a seat count, so confirm it with Rivian.

Which has more range, the R2 or the Model Y?

On the makers' US pages, the Model Y is listed at 321 miles (Rear-Wheel Drive), 294 (All-Wheel Drive) and 355 (Premium Rear-Wheel Drive), all EPA est. Rivian lists the R2 Standard at 275 miles and the Premium and Performance at 330. Figures are for the base setup and change with wheels and conditions.

Can an R2 use Tesla Superchargers?

Rivian's R2 page says every R2 has a NACS charge port and can charge at over 21,000 Tesla Superchargers across the US and Canada. That is Rivian's statement; we have not tested it, and the terms of access are for Rivian and Tesla to explain.

My reserved EV is ready to order, but lease rates are high. Is it worth taking it now or waiting for newer hardware?

We cannot tell you what future hardware will bring, and we quote no rates. Ask the maker in writing what is included today and what the offer terms are, compare it with the date you would wait for, and do not decide on a rumor. Rivian's page lists a Launch Package for the Performance for a limited time.

Do I need to confirm the R2 is available where I live?

Yes. Rivian's page labels the R2 Performance as available now, the Premium as late 2026 and the Standard as 2027, as of October 25, 2026. Ask Rivian for a date in writing, and see our guide on why a delivery date keeps changing for what to ask.

Which one should I buy?

The short answer above gives the profile for each. Both makers' pages are the final word: confirm each row on the day you order.
