Model 3 vs Model Y: which one should I buy?
Compare them on what you will notice every day: seats and cargo space, range and charging, and how you use the car. Tesla lists five seats in both. Its pages list 24 cubic feet of cargo space for the Model 3 and 76 for the Model Y, and a towing capacity of 3,500 lbs for the Model Y but no towing line for the Model 3. Range, speed and equipment are listed row by row below.
Who this comparison is for
This is for the United States. Every figure comes from the Compare Models view of Tesla’s own Model 3 and Model Y design pages, which we consulted on Oct 19, 2026, not from reviews or forums. Tesla changes versions and equipment, and its pages show prices that move, so we quote none: open both pages on the day you decide and check each row again.
The question behind the question
Most people asking “Model 3 or Model Y?” are really asking one of three things: how much space do I need, how do I want to get in and out of the car every day, and what do I give up in range or equipment. Tesla’s pages answer the first and third with figures. The second is yours to decide by sitting in both.
Space
| Model 3 | Model Y | |
|---|---|---|
| Seats | Five-seat interior | five seats |
| Total cargo space | 24 cubic feet | 76 cubic feet |
| Towing | no line on Tesla’s page | 3,500 lbs |
| Front touchscreen | 16’’ | 16’’ |
Tesla’s Model 3 page calls the car a “sport sedan”. Tesla lists the cargo figures on separate pages, so check that both describe the space the same way before you lean on the gap. We do not state a towing capacity for the Model 3, because Tesla’s page does not list one.
Range, speed and charging
| Model 3 RWD | Model 3 Premium RWD | Model Y Standard RWD | Model Y Premium RWD | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Range (EPA est.) | 321 mi | 363 mi | 321 mi | 355 mi |
| 0-60 mph | 5.8 sec | 4.9 sec | 6.8 sec | 5.4 sec |
| Supercharge in 15 min | up to 170 mi | up to 195 mi | up to 160 mi | up to 182 mi |
Tesla gives these figures for the base setup, and they change with the wheels you choose. Compare the same drive type and a similar version on both sides, so you are not comparing a Standard with a Premium by accident.
Comfort and equipment
| Model 3 RWD | Model 3 Premium RWD | Model Y Standard RWD | Model Y Premium RWD | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Roof | Panoramic glass roof | Panoramic glass roof | Knit textile roof | Panoramic glass roof |
| First-row seats | power recline, heated | power recline, heated and ventilated | Power recline, heated | Power recline, heated and ventilated |
| Rear touchscreen | not listed | 8’’ second-row touchscreen | not listed | 8’’ second-row touchscreen |
| Ambient lighting | not listed | Customizable wraparound ambient lighting | not listed | Customizable wraparound ambient lighting |
| Audio | 7 speaker | 9 speaker | 7 speaker | 15 speaker dual-control plus 1 subwoofer |
| Side mirrors | Manual-folding | Power-folding and auto-dimming | Manual-folding | Power-folding and auto-dimming |
| Shock absorbers | Passive | Frequency dependent | Passive | Frequency dependent passive |
“Not listed” means Tesla’s view shows nothing for that row, not that we know the feature is absent.
What the pages list as the same
Tesla lists these as the same across the versions it compares: 8 exterior cameras, hands-free power open on approach, 2 wireless phone chargers, the Grok voice assistant, Chill and Standard drive modes, Full Self-Driving (Supervised) capability, traffic-aware cruise control, and vehicle-to-load (120V, 20A AC).
How to compare them yourself on Tesla’s pages
Tesla’s pages are the reference, so read them yourself rather than relying on any summary, including ours. A simple method:
- Open the Model Y and Model 3 design pages and use Compare Models on each.
- Choose versions with the same drive type, so range and acceleration are comparable.
- Write down the rows that differ, and cross out the ones you would never notice. What is left is your real comparison.
- Look at the wheel options Tesla lists, and check whether the page says they affect the range figure. We have not confirmed that.
- Take a screenshot of both pages on the day you order. If the equipment is described differently at delivery, you can show what you saw.
Third-party summaries can be out of date within weeks, because Tesla changes what each version includes. The tables above are a way to organize your comparison, not a substitute for the pages.
Questions to ask yourself
Tesla’s pages cannot answer these, so they are ours:
- How many people ride in the car in an ordinary week, and how tall are they?
- What do you carry: groceries, strollers, sports gear, luggage for a road trip? Cargo space is a number on a page until you try to load your own things.
- Where does it park? A garage, a tight street spot and a tall roof line are different problems.
- How often do you take trips long enough to charge on the road? Compare Tesla’s Supercharging figures only if the answer is “often”.
- Will you tow anything? Tesla lists towing for the Model Y and no towing line for the Model 3.
Who each may suit (our opinion)
This part is our reading, not Tesla’s, and you may weigh it differently.
- Choose by use, not by label. If you regularly carry more than a few bags, or need to tow, the Model Y’s listed figures are the ones that answer that.
- If you mainly drive alone or as a pair, in town, and the cargo space is enough, the comparison will probably come down to range, speed and which one you enjoy sitting in.
Neither is the “right” one. The useful question is which two or three rows of the tables you would still care about after a month.
After you choose: check the car matches the order
Whichever one you order, the row that matters on delivery day is “did I get what I ordered?” Seats, screen, roof and audio are easy to compare with the order summary if you do it calmly, and harder if you are rushed in a lot.
TSL Check is the iPhone app we make for that moment. You choose your model at the start (it covers the Model 3 and the Model Y, among others), and the delivery checklist walks you through the car area by area, with the severity of each item and a place for a photo and a note (how it works). Write the equipment from your order next to it and compare. For the Model Y versions in particular, see Model Y Standard vs Premium. If you are still waiting for a date, see why the delivery date keeps changing.

Whatever you find, ask the delivery advisor to record it before you sign. What you can do next depends on your contract and local consumer law, so read your order paperwork before the day.
Frequently asked questions
Which is bigger, the Model 3 or the Model Y?
Both are listed with five seats. Tesla's pages list total cargo space of 24 cubic feet for the Model 3 and 76 cubic feet for the Model Y. Tesla lists towing of 3,500 lbs for the Model Y, and its Model 3 page has no towing line, so we do not state a towing capacity for the Model 3.
Which has more range?
Tesla lists an EPA estimate for each version. In Tesla's Compare Models pages, the Model 3 rear-wheel drive is 321 miles and the Premium rear-wheel drive 363 miles; the Model Y Standard rear-wheel drive is 321 miles and the Premium rear-wheel drive 355 miles. The figures depend on version, drive type and wheels, so compare like with like.
Which is quicker and which adds more range when Supercharging?
Tesla lists 0-60 mph of 5.8 seconds (Model 3) and 4.9 seconds (Model 3 Premium), against 6.8 and 5.4 seconds for the Model Y Standard and Premium rear-wheel drive. For Supercharging, it lists the range added by 15 minutes: up to 170 and 195 miles for the Model 3 versions, and up to 160 and 182 for the Model Y versions.
How do I compare them without relying on price?
Write down the rows you would notice every day, such as seats, cargo space, the screen and range, and cross out the rest. We do not quote prices because Tesla changes them.
Can I confirm at delivery that the car matches my order?
Yes. Keep your order summary and compare it with the car in front of you, item by item. If something listed on your order is missing, ask the delivery advisor to record it before you sign.
