Model Y L vs Model Y: which one should you order?

Updated · Applies to: United States · Model Y

Pick the Model Y L if you regularly carry more than five people, or want a real third row: Tesla lists it with up to six seats, 89 cubic feet of maximum cargo space and a battery and drive unit warranty of 8 years or 120,000 miles. Pick the standard Model Y if five seats are enough, your garage is tight or you want the longest listed range: the Premium Rear-Wheel Drive lists 355 miles against the L's 332.

The short answer

Pick the Model Y L if you regularly have more than five people in the car, you want a proper third row, or you want the longer battery warranty. Tesla’s US page lists it as a long-wheelbase, all-wheel-drive Premium with up to six seats (second-row captain seats, a power-reclining, heated third row) and 89 cubic feet of cargo space with the middle and rear seats folded.

Pick the standard Model Y if five seats are enough, your garage or parking spot is short, or you want the most range on paper: the Model Y Premium Rear-Wheel Drive is listed at 355 miles (EPA est.), the L Premium at 332. The standard Model Y also comes in more versions, from Rear-Wheel Drive to Performance.

Everything below comes from Tesla’s own US pages, which we read on October 25, 2026. We could not confirm the L in other countries, so check your country’s page too.

What actually changes in daily life

Seats. Five against up to six is the main reason to buy the L. Tesla describes the L’s second row as captain seats with ventilation and heating and its third row with power recline, heating and ventilation. If you only need a third row for the occasional school-run extra, ask yourself whether a car that is 6.9 inches longer is worth it (195.6 inches against 188.7 for the Model Y Rear-Wheel Drive, our arithmetic).

Your garage. The L is also 1.9 inches taller and 551 pounds heavier than the Model Y Rear-Wheel Drive on Tesla’s pages (65.7 inches against 63.8; 4,612 pounds against 4,061). Measure the space before you order, not after.

Cargo. Tesla lists 89 cubic feet for the L as a maximum with the middle and rear seats folded flat. For the Model Y it lists 74 cubic feet on one page and 76 on another, without saying the three figures are measured the same way. Do not subtract one from another: load your own things.

Towing. Both list 3,500 pounds.

Range and charging. 332 miles for the L, 321 for the Model Y Rear-Wheel Drive, 355 for the Premium Rear-Wheel Drive, 294 for the All-Wheel Drive. For charging, Tesla lists up to 172 miles added by a 15-minute charge for the L and 160 for the Rear-Wheel Drive, with 250 kW and 225 kW maximums.

Warranty. The basic vehicle warranty is 4 years or 50,000 miles for both. The battery and drive unit warranty is 8 years or 120,000 miles for the L and 8 years or 100,000 for the Model Y. Only the document that comes with your car counts.

On delivery day: 7 checks

TSL Check is the iPhone app we make for this part. It walks you around the car area by area, with a photo and a note for each point. The seven that matter most for a Model Y L:

  1. Count the seats and fold each row; make sure all of them move and lock.
  2. Check the second-row screen and the third-row controls on the order.
  3. Walk around the car in daylight: panel gaps, paint, glass.
  4. Check the wheels and tires against your order.
  5. Look at the charge port, charge cable and any accessories you ordered.
  6. Check the screen, cameras and driver-assistance features you paid for.
  7. Ask the advisor to record anything wrong before you sign. Our guide on what to expect at a Tesla delivery center lists what to bring.

Why you can trust this comparison

We make TSL Check, and we also make companion apps for other brands. We sell no cars and nothing here depends on your choice. We quote no prices, because they move; every number comes from Tesla’s own pages, dated above, and the arithmetic we did is marked as ours.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Model Y L worth it over the standard Model Y?

It is worth it if you will use the third row. Tesla's US pages list the L with up to six seats and 89 cubic feet of maximum cargo, against five seats for the standard Model Y. If you rarely carry more than five, the L's extra length (195.6 inches against 188.7) and weight (4,612 pounds against 4,061) are what you pay for.

Does the Model Y L have more range than the Model Y?

Not across the board. Tesla lists 332 miles (EPA est.) for the L Premium, 355 for the Model Y Premium Rear-Wheel Drive, 321 for the Rear-Wheel Drive and 294 for the All-Wheel Drive. The L sits between the top and the bottom of the range.

My delivery date keeps changing. Is it worth switching to another version?

Only if the other version fits your life better, not because of the date. A different version is a different order, with its own date. Read why the date moves in our guide on why the Tesla delivery date keeps changing, and ask your advisor in writing before you switch.

Why does one Model Y list 0-60 mph times that differ from another with the same range?

Versions with different drive units list different acceleration even at similar range: Tesla lists 4.6 seconds for the All-Wheel Drive and 5.4 for the Premium Rear-Wheel Drive, for example, with 294 and 355 miles. Read the row for your exact version.

Is the Model Y L sold outside the US?

We could only confirm the US: Tesla's US page lists the Model Y L Premium. We did not read other countries' pages for it, so open your own country's Tesla page before you plan around it.

Can I take a Model Y L on a long trip as easily as a Model Y?

Tesla lists up to 172 miles added by a 15-minute charge for the L and up to 160 for the Rear-Wheel Drive, with a 250 kW maximum against 225 kW. Both depend on the charger, the battery temperature and the weather.
