Tesla Certified Pre-Owned: what the warranty covers and what you still need to check

Updated · Applies to: United States

Tesla's warranty page says a Certified Pre-Owned vehicle bought directly from Tesla is covered by the remainder of the 4 years or 50,000 miles of the Basic Vehicle Limited Warranty, then by 1 year or 10,000 miles more, and that the balance of the original Battery and Drive Unit warranty still applies. It does not describe the inspection, so check the car yourself.

Who this guide is for

This guide is for the United States and uses Tesla’s own support pages, which we read on October 29, 2026. It covers what Tesla’s warranty page says about Certified Pre-Owned vehicles bought directly from Tesla, what it does not say and what is left for you to check. We quote no prices, and we are not lawyers. If you are buying from a private seller instead, read what to ask a private seller of a used Tesla.

What Tesla says a Certified Pre-Owned Tesla gets

Tesla’s Vehicle Warranty page has a Pre-Owned Vehicle Limited Warranty section. It says the warranty gives additional peace of mind to owners of Certified Pre-Owned vehicles purchased directly from Tesla, and says:

  • The vehicle is covered by the remainder of the 4 years or 50,000 miles left on the Basic Vehicle Limited Warranty.
  • After that expires, the Pre-Owned Vehicle Limited Warranty provides additional coverage of 1 year or 10,000 miles.
  • If the Basic Vehicle Limited Warranty has already expired, the Pre-Owned Vehicle Limited Warranty provides coverage of 1 year or 10,000 miles, starting from your delivery date.
  • The balance of the original Battery and Drive Unit Limited Warranty still applies.
  • If you lease from Tesla, the Pre-Owned Vehicle Limited Warranty runs up to the term or original mileage stated in the lease, whichever comes first, instead of 1 year or 10,000 miles.

Tesla’s After Taking Delivery page adds that new vehicles are protected by a New Vehicle Limited Warranty and Certified Pre-Owned vehicles by the Pre-Owned Vehicle Limited Warranty, and that Monroney labels are only available for new vehicle purchases.

What the numbers mean for you

Our arithmetic: if a Certified Pre-Owned car still has some of its original 4 years or 50,000 miles, that remainder comes first. You then add 1 year or 10,000 miles, whichever comes first. If the basic period has run out, you get only the 1 year or 10,000 miles, counted from the delivery date. So the coverage left depends on the age and the miles of the car you are looking at: ask for the dates and the odometer reading, and ask Tesla to confirm in writing how much basic warranty remains.

For the battery, Tesla’s original warranty for the versions it lists includes a minimum of 70% retention of battery capacity over the warranty period, and the balance of it applies to a Certified Pre-Owned car. How long that balance runs depends on the car’s age and mileage and on its version. Do not treat 70% as a guide to what your car should show today: read a used Tesla with 87% battery health for how to read a battery figure.

What Tesla does not say

On the pages we read, Tesla does not list what its certification inspects or what a car must pass to be certified. It also does not say that a Certified Pre-Owned car is free of cosmetic defects, previous repairs or accident history. We did not read the Pre-Owned Vehicle Limited Warranty document itself, so we do not describe its exclusions and conditions: read it before you buy. Tesla’s page says its summary is for general knowledge, and the warranty provided with your vehicle is authoritative.

Where the warranty ends and your check begins

A warranty repairs defects it covers. It does not tell you what is wrong with the car on the day you see it. Things to look at yourself:

  1. The documents. Ask for the Pre-Owned Vehicle Limited Warranty, the original warranty dates and the service history.
  2. The car’s age and mileage against the warranty period left.
  3. The body and paint in daylight, panel by panel.
  4. Tires and brakes, including the date code on each tire.
  5. The battery figure and where it comes from.
  6. The keys, the screens, the cameras and every feature.
  7. Open recalls by VIN. See how to check a Tesla for recalls by VIN.

Questions to ask Tesla

These are our questions, not Tesla’s:

  • How much of the Basic Vehicle Limited Warranty remains on this car, in dates and miles?
  • What does your certification inspect, and can I see the report for this car?
  • Has this car had repairs, paint work or accident damage, and where is that recorded?
  • What exactly does the Pre-Owned Vehicle Limited Warranty exclude?
  • What happens if I find a problem in the first days, and who do I contact?

What the app adds

You will not remember all this at the viewing, and the paperwork is long. TSL Check is the iPhone app we make. Its used-car checklist covers battery and range, the 12V battery, brakes and rust, title and liens, service and accident history, mileage and warranty, and keeps your photos and notes on each item (how it works). It does not replace an independent inspection. Choose “Used purchase” and your model at the start, and go through the list at the viewing.

Why you can trust this guide

We make TSL Check. We sell no cars and nothing here depends on your choice. We quote no prices; everything cited comes from the Tesla support pages named above, dated October 29, 2026.

Frequently asked questions

What does Tesla say a Certified Pre-Owned Tesla is covered by?

Tesla's warranty page (October 29, 2026) says the Pre-Owned Vehicle Limited Warranty gives additional coverage to owners of Certified Pre-Owned vehicles purchased directly from Tesla. They are covered by the remainder of the 4 years or 50,000 miles left on the Basic Vehicle Limited Warranty, and after that by 1 year or 10,000 miles.

What if the basic warranty has already expired?

Tesla says that if the Basic Vehicle Limited Warranty has already expired, the Pre-Owned Vehicle Limited Warranty provides coverage of 1 year or 10,000 miles starting from your delivery date.

Does the battery warranty still apply?

Tesla says the balance of the original Battery and Drive Unit Limited Warranty still applies for Certified Pre-Owned vehicles. The original warranty includes a minimum of 70% retention of battery capacity over the warranty period for the versions Tesla lists. Read the document for your car.

Is the warranty the same if I lease a Certified Pre-Owned Tesla from Tesla?

Tesla's page says that if you lease from Tesla, the Pre-Owned Vehicle Limited Warranty runs up to the term or original mileage stated in the lease, whichever comes first, instead of 1 year or 10,000 miles. Other terms remain the same.

Does Tesla say what its certification inspects?

Not on the pages we read. The warranty and after-delivery pages name the Certified Pre-Owned vehicle and its warranty but do not list inspection points. Ask Tesla for what the certification covers, in writing.

Do I still need to inspect a Certified Pre-Owned Tesla?

We think so. A warranty is not an inspection, and Tesla's pages say its warranty summary is for general knowledge, with the warranty provided with your vehicle being the authoritative document. Check the car and the paperwork yourself.
