BYD Seal vs Tesla Model 3: which should you buy?

Updated · Applies to: United Kingdom · Model 3

Pick the Tesla Model 3 if range matters most: Tesla's UK page lists 466 miles (WLTP) for the Premium Long Range Rear-Wheel Drive and 410 for the All-Wheel Drive, against BYD's 354 for the Seal Design and 323 for the Excellence AWD. Pick the BYD Seal if you tow or want more standard equipment: BYD lists 1,500 kg braked towing on the AWD, a 15.6-inch screen and ventilated front seats on both trims.

The short answer

Pick the Tesla Model 3 if range is your top priority. Tesla’s UK page lists 466 miles (WLTP) for the Premium Long Range Rear-Wheel Drive and 410 for the Premium Long Range All-Wheel Drive. BYD’s UK leaflet lists the Seal at 354 miles for the Design (rear-wheel drive) and 323 for the Excellence AWD.

Pick the BYD Seal if you tow, or you want a long list of equipment as standard. BYD lists 1,500 kg braked towing for the Excellence AWD (the Model 3 lists 1,000 kg) and, on both trims, a panoramic roof, a 15.6-inch screen, ventilated and heated front seats and a 360-degree camera. The Excellence AWD adds a head-up display.

Everything below comes from the makers’ own UK documents, which we read on October 25, 2026: Tesla’s Model 3 design page and BYD’s official Seal specifications leaflet. Neither maker’s warranty is compared: BYD’s leaflet does not give it, and we did not read Tesla’s document.

What actually changes in daily life

Range. Compare drive type with drive type. Rear-wheel drive: Seal Design 354 miles; Model 3 Rear-Wheel Drive 332, Premium Long Range 466. All-wheel drive: Seal Excellence 323; Model 3 Premium Long Range 410. Both makers say real range varies with speed, weather and load.

Speed. On paper the top versions tie: 3.8 seconds for the Model 3 Premium Long Range All-Wheel Drive and for the Seal Excellence AWD. Tesla quotes 0-60 mph and BYD 0-62 mph, so they are not strictly the same test. The Seal Design lists 5.9 seconds and 312 PS; the Model 3 Rear-Wheel Drive lists 6.2 seconds.

Charging. BYD lists a 150 kW DC maximum, 37 minutes for 10 to 80 percent and 26 minutes for 30 to 80 percent, an 11 kW AC maximum and a CCS2 port. Its leaflet’s headline page says 26 minutes for 10 to 80 percent, which does not match its own table, so use the table and ask your dealer. Tesla lists up to 168 miles added by a 15-minute charge for all three Model 3 versions, a different measure that we cannot convert.

Space. BYD lists a 485-litre boot and a 72-litre front boot. Tesla lists 682 litres of total cargo space. The pages do not say these are measured the same way, so load your own things. BYD lists the Seal at 4,800 mm long and 1,875 mm wide (2,150 with mirrors); the Tesla page we read gives no dimensions.

Towing. Model 3: 1,000 kg. Seal: 750 kg unbraked, 1,000 kg braked (Design) or 1,500 kg (Excellence AWD), only with an OEM-verified towbar.

Equipment. The Seal’s leaflet lists a heat pump, V2L (with a dedicated cable), Nappa leather seats and a 12-speaker Dynaudio system as standard on both trims. Tesla lists a panoramic roof on all three Model 3 versions and ventilated front seats only on the Premium versions, with 7, 9 or 15 speakers depending on the version.

Battery. BYD lists an 82.5 kWh Blade Battery (LFP). Tesla’s compare page does not give the Model 3 battery capacity.

Trim by trim (our arithmetic)

Pairing each Seal with the closest Model 3 by drive type: the Seal Design (rear-wheel drive, 354 miles) sits against the Model 3 Premium Long Range Rear-Wheel Drive (466 miles), a listed gap of 112 miles in the Tesla’s favor, and against the Model 3 Rear-Wheel Drive (332 miles), where the Seal is listed 22 miles higher. The Seal Excellence AWD (323 miles) sits against the Model 3 Premium Long Range All-Wheel Drive (410 miles), an 87-mile gap in the Tesla’s favor. On towing, the Excellence AWD lists 500 kg more braked than the Model 3.

Two limits. We did not read the Model 3 Performance, which Tesla lists separately. And BYD’s leaflets for other European markets list a third, smaller Seal (the Comfort, with a 61.4 kWh battery) that the UK leaflet we read does not; check which Seal trims your dealer offers.

Before you order: 7 checks

  1. Which exact version is on your order? Compare rear-wheel drive with rear-wheel drive.
  2. The date in writing, and what happens if it moves. See why the Tesla delivery date keeps changing.
  3. The warranty document for your exact version. Neither is compared here.
  4. Home charging: the supplier, the installation and the connector on each car.
  5. Insurance quotes for the exact version.
  6. Boot space in person: bring what you carry.
  7. Screenshots of the maker’s page and your order, today. Makers change versions.

On delivery day: 7 checks

TSL Check is the iPhone app we make for Tesla deliveries, and BD Check is its companion for BYD. Both walk you around the car area by area, with a photo and a note for each point. The seven that matter most:

  1. Walk around in daylight: panel gaps, paint, glass.
  2. Check the wheels and tires against your order.
  3. Test every seat, the roof and the boot, including the front one.
  4. Check the charge port and the cable you ordered.
  5. Check the screen, cameras and the driver-assistance features on the order.
  6. Check the keys and the app pairing.
  7. Ask the advisor to record anything wrong before you sign. See what to expect at a Tesla delivery center.

Why you can trust this comparison

We make TSL Check and BD Check, and we also make RVN Check for Rivian. We sell no cars and nothing here depends on your choice. We quote no prices, because they move; every number comes from the makers’ own UK documents, dated above.

Frequently asked questions

Which has more range, the Seal or the Model 3?

On the makers' UK pages, the Model 3 lists 332 miles (Rear-Wheel Drive), 466 (Premium Long Range Rear-Wheel Drive) and 410 (Premium Long Range All-Wheel Drive), all WLTP. BYD lists the Seal at 354 miles (Design, rear-wheel drive) and 323 (Excellence AWD). Compare drive type with drive type.

Is the Seal quicker than the Model 3?

At the top, they tie on paper: Tesla lists 3.8 seconds for the Model 3 Premium Long Range All-Wheel Drive and BYD lists 3.8 seconds for the Seal Excellence AWD. The thresholds differ, though: Tesla quotes 0-60 mph and BYD 0-62 mph.

Which can tow more?

Tesla lists 1,000 kg for the Model 3. BYD lists 750 kg unbraked for both Seal trims and 1,000 kg braked for the Design and 1,500 kg for the Excellence AWD, only with an OEM-verified towbar.

I am a first-time EV buyer. What should I watch for before I buy either?

Confirm the exact version, the date in writing, the home-charging setup and the warranty document, and take dated screenshots of the maker's page and your order. The seven checks in this guide cover them.

How much does insurance cost for each?

We quote no prices, because they depend on the insurer, the driver and the car. Ask for written quotes with the exact version and compare what each covers, not only the total.

What do I need to charge each at home?

BYD lists an 11 kW on-board charger and a CCS2 port for the Seal. Tesla's UK page does not list the Model 3's on-board charger in the part we read. Ask the supplier of your home charger which version is on your order, and see our guide on charging a Tesla from a normal outlet for the Tesla side.
