Does the Tesla warranty cover a defect I find at delivery?

Updated · Applies to: United States

Tesla's US warranty page lists the New Vehicle Limited Warranty, with a Basic Vehicle Limited Warranty of 4 years or 50,000 miles, and says to use its Service Centers. It does not say how a defect you spot at delivery is handled before you sign. Record it in writing first. Your own warranty document is what counts; this is not legal advice.

Who this guide is for

This guide is for the United States. It reports what Tesla’s own US support pages say about the warranty, as we read them on November 2, 2026, and what they leave out. The warranty page says its summary is for general knowledge only and that the authoritative terms are in the warranty provided with your vehicle, so that document is what counts. We give no prices. This is not legal advice, and we do not promise any coverage. Other countries have their own pages, listed below.

The short answer

Tesla’s US warranty page says new vehicles are protected by a New Vehicle Limited Warranty. It names the Basic Vehicle Limited Warranty, which covers the vehicle for 4 years or 50,000 miles, whichever comes first, and a separate body rust warranty for perforation caused by a defect in material or workmanship, for 12 years and unlimited miles. To receive warranty service you need to take the car to a Tesla Service Center.

What the page does not say is what happens to a defect you notice at the delivery appointment, before you sign. We did not find a Tesla page that answers that. So our advice, which is not Tesla’s, is to ask the advisor to record the defect in writing before you sign and to keep a copy.

What Tesla’s pages say

  • The warranties. The warranty page lists a New Vehicle Limited Warranty with several parts, including the Basic Vehicle Limited Warranty and a body rust warranty. The Certified Pre-Owned car has its own pre-owned warranty, not covered here.
  • Where to go. The page says warranty service means taking the vehicle to a Tesla Service Center. It also says you can find your warranty in the Tesla app, under Specs & Warranty.
  • What to tell Tesla. The page says Tesla asks you to provide written notice of defects within a reasonable time during the warranty period, and to give Tesla a chance to repair them before you pursue any remedy under the law where you live.
  • Estimates. Tesla says repairs expected to be covered under warranty should show as zero on a service estimate.
  • Transfer. Tesla says the New Vehicle Limited Warranty transfers to a new owner when the ownership transfer is done through Tesla.
  • After delivery. Tesla’s page about taking delivery says new vehicles are protected by the New Vehicle Limited Warranty and that Certified Pre-Owned vehicles have their own.

What the pages leave out

  • The delivery inspection. The delivery page lists the documents to bring and the vehicle introduction. We read nothing about inspecting the body, paint or panel gaps, and no Tesla page we found for any country gives a tolerance for gaps. See our guide on Tesla panel gaps at delivery.
  • A defect found before you sign. Nothing says whether Tesla fixes it before handover, after it, or not at all, or how that interacts with the warranty.
  • When each warranty starts. The page we read does not say. Check your warranty document.
  • What counts as a defect. The page leaves that to the warranty document.

What to do at delivery

Our suggestions, not Tesla’s:

  • Walk around the car in daylight and photograph every panel, the paint, the glass, the wheels and the interior, with the date visible.
  • If something looks wrong, ask the advisor to write it down on the paperwork or in the Tesla app before you sign, and keep a copy.
  • Ask in writing which warranty would cover it and where to book the repair.
  • Keep every service estimate and message. If something shows a cost that you expect to be covered, ask why.
  • Take dated screenshots of the Tesla warranty page you rely on. Pages change.

What the warranty pages say in other countries

We read these pages on November 2, 2026. They are summaries, and each says the warranty document with your car is what counts.

  • Germany. The basic warranty is 4 years or 80,000 km. The battery and drive unit warranty is 8 years, with 160,000 km (Model Y Rear-Wheel Drive) or 192,000 km (other Model Y versions listed), and a minimum of 70 percent of battery capacity over the period.
  • Spain. The basic warranty is 4 years or 80,000 km, with the same battery and drive unit terms as Germany.
  • France. The standard warranty is 4 years or 80,000 km, the restraint system warranty 5 years or 100,000 km, the battery and drive unit 8 years (160,000 or 192,000 km, 70 percent) and corrosion 12 years.
  • Korea. The basic warranty is 4 years or 80,000 km, the restraint system 5 years or 100,000 km and body corrosion 12 years with no mileage limit. Korean law on exchanges and refunds for new cars is covered in our Korean guides.
  • Türkiye. The basic warranty is 4 years or 80,000 km, and the restraint system 5 years or 100,000 km.

What we did not confirm

We did not read your warranty document, the full legal terms or any dealer or advisor policy for defects found at handover. We did not confirm when each warranty starts. We do not know how Tesla treats a defect noticed at delivery. For the delivery day itself, see what to expect at a Tesla delivery center.

Record the car before you sign

TSL Check is the iPhone app we make for Tesla deliveries. Its checklist takes you around the car area by area, with a photo and a note for each point (how it works). It gives you a dated record to show the advisor and to keep with your paperwork. It does not change your warranty or decide what is covered.

Whatever you find at delivery, ask the advisor to record it before you sign, and keep a copy.
